"Hel was the goddess of the underworlds, Helheim and Niflheim, in Norse mythology. Odin threw Hel there and gave her authority over those who do not die gloriously in battle but of sickness or of old age."
"Hel is referred to as a daughter of Loki, and to "go to Hel" is to die. In the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning, Hel is described as having been appointed by the god Odin as ruler of a realm of the same name, located in Niflheim." I was introduced to Hel from Marvel comics THOR. So I leaned more towards that in visual terms. She's described pretty much as a hag in traditional reads.
